Half-Life

Half-Life

How can i stop Getting Lost?
Everytime i make some progress i keep getting stuck on some roadblock and not knowing where to go, maybe I am too used to yellow paint in modern games.'

should i look up a walkthrough or will that sour the expierience?

Yeah you're definitely too used to modern games holding your hand too much. I say that as someone who was also far too used to the yellow paint before finishing this game for the first time. I can't lie and say I didn't use a guide once or twice; but if I could impart some wisdom from the experience I have now - Half-life has its own subtle but genius way of guiding the player. You just have to know what to look for. Once you've cracked the code, it's almost like the game always used yellow paint, but now you're wearing AR glasses that let you actually see it. Here's a small hint: the game uses colors in a very clever way.

Hope this helps and that you find much more enjoyment in the game from here on out!

Most areas have context clues for how to proceed. Note what is available to you within the confines of the zone and consider how it could help you get somewhere. For those areas without items to help it's gonna be a button or something you need to interact with by hitting/shooting/climbing it. Lastly consider all the options your weapons give you (though that's more of an opposing forces/blue shift thing). If THOSE all fail you, yea go for a guide, some of them are rather obscure. Many of us solved this stuff back in 1999 without guides, but we were also used to not having guides or ingame handholding at the time.

Also, backwards is never the right way unless you're poking around for loot, always forward. And do pay attention to NPC's, they'll often tell you what your current objective is. Once, unless you have to reload the area.

Technically, that's the third. After grabbing the crowbar and climbed up the elevator, help the policeman kill the zombies and make your way to the lobby (the door you came in after getting off the tram). There's an openes vent there, crawl through and you're on your own.

The guard won't follow you since the NPCs can't crouch so leave him there, you'll find a pistol to pick up shortly after.

The game is fairly linear up until the next one...

Technically yes but Black Mesa Inbound is Chapter 0 and personally, while Anomalous Material is also technically Chapter 1, I consider it more as an introductory chapter whereas Unforeseen Consequences as the real first chapter. But I digress.

Honestly OP: just try searching for a bit and if you're really stuck after a dozen of minutes check gamefaqs or a walkthrough.

Also I'll be honest: since I didn't have a computer powerful enough to decently run Half-Life² (nor the Source Engine) I decided to watch the game as a let's play (yes, it technically spoiled me) but since the game is good I still enjoyed playing it afterwards.

Since it's a mostly single player game there's nothing bad about using guides or a video. I mean who has any authority to judge and decide how people should be enjoying their entertainment product after all?

I would immediately rebind crouch to Shift, walking is fairly useless in comparison to crouching, and you need to use duck-jumps a lot in the game to progress properly. Ctrl and Z are very awkward for combining them with WASD controls.

Also edit any other controls so they're comfortable for you, a few of the defaults are weird. And mouse sensitivity is mostly personal preference. Maybe run through the training course if you haven't.

What was the first FPS that added crouch? Duke3D?

I'm still wondering why some game bound that to c instead of Control.

While I may agree with walking being useless in Half-Life I think muscle memory would prevent me from doing so.

Control and Z (or W for Azerty keyboards) doesn't feel awkward to me.

Some are from Quake.

As long as it's Raw Input.

I'd be mildly worried that you lack enough buttons...what's the bare minimum....
Stick for movement i assume, stick for aim, jump, crouch, primary fire, secondary fire, interact button, next weapon (maybe previous weapon too... # keys so useful here), probably reload but you could get by without it, flashlight is useful but not 100% sure its required anywhere...

Ok yea you probably have enough buttons on a modern controller if you only need 9 to play half life well enough. I'd dedicate extras to weapon categories.
