HL2 didnt have developer commentary until 2024. it was only added for the HL2 anniversary

HL1 also had an anniversary event but no developer commentary got added

It was a thing since 2005 with the release of HL2 Lost Coast. It's nothing new. It's not there in HL1 because it wasn't really a thing in the 90s. You shot aliens and felt good about it. That's it.

By that same logic you should also ask "where are the achievements for HL1?" or "where are the points shop items for HL1?" etc. etc. Valve doesn't really care about its legacy anymore.
It would be hard to do in goldsrc, especially the subtitle part that most games with dev commentaries have. However there's a really good anniversary documentary which consists mostly of devs talking about the game, I highly recommend it if you want to see cool dev insight
Did HL2 (the base game) got developer commentary? I know episode two and lost coast have it when it's out.

I'd still love if Valve could add subtitles in Half-Life for accessibility.

I do agree that unlike Source it may be hard to implement a specific object that enables a dev's commentary since Goldsource doesn't even have proper sound functions for items (like how Barney is the one doing the "beep" sound (as his mouth is moving at the same time) when he opens the tram door.

Maybe that would be easier to do in Xash3D but Valve wouldn't use this engine I think.

They have still made an anniversary update for this game.

I do think that achievements, point shop items and dev commentary are not exactly mandatory for this game to still be a classic to replay.
