Particle Bug crashing sfm confused what to do to solve
So my particles are broken, saw that having a broken pcf can cause that to be an issue, where you instance the particles, and it causes a crash.

I recently had a model that was causing conflicts (at least I assume) which I downloaded from sfmlab, deleted it and everything was back to normal no problem

Now out of nowhere its doing the same thing even though that pcf is gone and was already working just fine before.

Went ahead and removed particles and sorted them, add on particles, workshop particles, all into seperate folders on another drive for saving or moving back later, and only have the starter pcf's from when you download sfm (tf,hl all that stuff) have double checked they are all the normal regular particles.

The program still suffers the issue with the bug.

Description of said bug in detail:

Opening particle effect for example: blood_trail.pcf

The drop down menu won't show for the Particle System Definition it is just blank

When hitting OK it spawn in a particle that isn't a real particle labelled as 1

When instancing the fake particle it crashed sfm.

Appreciate any help, dunno what am doing wrong at this point.

Let me know if I need to explain anything I didn't write properly or explain well. Thanks!

From what I learned, there was a memory leak that happened since March 4th that caused SFM to crash when you want to add particles. Until that thing gets fixed, if Valve actually cares or anything, you may have to use a workaround.

On your Steam Client, right click on Source Filmmaker, and select "Properties." You will see the launch options in front of you. Add the command "-nosteam" in that field, and then close it. Hopefully there won't be any crashes with that thing...

Keep in mind that when you do have the "-nosteam" in that field, hours will not count and you will not be able to download workshop items. So if you do want to do download workshop items, remove "-nosteam" then launch SFM.

I know it may be frustrated when you need something new, but every one of us has to deal with this problem. I was affected by it too...
