Didn't really do it for me.

It's better than most other AAA games in the time it was released in, but it's also not as good as the predecessor. It looks very pretty with some beautiful environments, but the campaign felt kind of short (and I did take my time snoozing through it) and the gameplay is at points kind of... off. The parrying mechanic is strange, some encounters are pretty much just rolling and jumping around to dodge stuff. The jump pack segments were kind of awkward with the controls feeling much worse than the original. Some segments that could have been cool encounters are reduced to pre-rendered cutscenes.

There's a lot of tension between Titus and his squad but the resolution feels a little bit too sudden and could really have benefited from the game being longer. This stands out more because Tyranids are much less characterful opponents than Orks and the Thousand Sons enemies mostly aren't all that chatty either.

Switching between game modes feels awkward and customization is somewhat restrictive, but I haven't really bothered with the multiplayer yet. It's probably fine and would add a little bit of longevity to it, and I both like and dislike how some segments of the story were spun off to separate squads/MP missions as it makes the world feel a bit bigger. It's strange because I feel like it's just not as good as the original, but from what little is known about the original Space Marine 2 that was planned by Relic it's probably better than what we would have gotten back then anyway.

I don't hate it but I wouldn't recommend it. It doesn't do anything extremely wrong but it doesn't grab me either and left me feeling unsatisfied. It seems to crash in Linux after a recent patch, so I played through it in Windows.

Unplayable due to the stupid RockStar launcher. Installs a bunch of garbage on the side.

I thought this would be a stupid meme game and only bought it because it was almost the only visual novel on sale that wasn't another damn chinese porno with AI-generated crap assets and stock sounds looped forever. Sometimes you're just stuck on a laptop for a week or two and want something more interactive than another god-awful Amazon adaptation series but less hardcore gaming than some truck repair or lawn mower business simulator.

Then it turned out it's somehow reasonably well-made with some fairly clever use of the limited engine and actual animated segments, and a cameo appearance by my favorite uncle Ted. WTF!?

Just about the only legitimate complaint I have is that some of the backgrounds are just photos with a filter over them. I wouldn't mind another couple endings and branches between the current ones so there's more of a gradient from good to bad, but for the price tag it's a pretty good amount of content.

8.8/10 taught me to not push wheelchair sufferers into the river again. With these valuable life lessons I can stop going to prison every other weekend.

EDIT: goty tbqh

Decent budget game. Good alternative to other games in the genre, it is similar to modern XCOM but different enough to not be a clone.

Story isn't much to write about, fairly typical of the Alien series. Characters gave me bad vibes at first because they seemed to follow a checklist, but beyond the first introduction most of them don't really matter much beyond background decoration so you're not just looking at an empty menu. It was very hard to get invested in any of them - at worst the ones that were killed off just felt cheap because they never utilized them for anything in the first place. That said, while one-dimensional none of them were particularly annoying either.

Graphics and sound are adequate. I had some issues with models flickering in and out of existence on some screens, and the take-off sequence when you launch a mission tends to lag a lot when the hangar doors open and the dropship flies out. Rain effects also made one of the missions start lagging extremely bad about 30 minutes in, but restarting the game temporarily fixes it.

Gameplay is mostly pretty good. The mechanics encourage stealth far more than action - as the mission difficulty increases you will likely be bogged down so much a temporary retreat is the best course of action. Some missions felt a bit cheap, especially the "boss fight" during the return to Pioneer Station which gives you little time to assess the encounter. Most marine abilities are useful and easy to figure out, though I found myself often laying mines everywhere I went and used a Tecker with a drone upgrade to lure aliens into them for easy kills without raising the alarm. Combined with sentry turrets many hard encounters could be cheesed this way if given a little bit of time to prepare.

Overall, a fair rating is somewhere around a 6-7/10. The story and characters could be a lot more engaging, it's very similar to many of the various stand-alone comic book series in the same setting, and minor technical issues drag it down a bit too. The core gameplay loop is pretty good, however, and I could see myself playing it more on NG+ to get various achievements. Recommended for fans of the genre more so than fans of the franchise.

It seemed fine at first, got into the action surprisingly quick, then the host disconnected and I was booted back to the hangar area. Other people seem to be having similar issues, not a great system for this kind of game.
