Just found out Anita Sarkisian is involved in this project... Had I known I would have never bought it, wish I could get my money back. I refuse to support someone whose goal is to destroy an industry she was not involved in and had experience in. She came into the gaming sphere not to broaden and evolve, but to force a repugnant viewpoint. I won't be buying any more games from Mega Crit.

Edit...
Tried to request a refund = denied since I'd played 10 hours. Will never ever buy anything from Mega Crit ever again. They purposefully waited to release info that Sarkisian was involved. I'll never support any company that operates like this. Won't ever play either Slay the Spires again either...

A hidden gem, a fantasy pop-up book version of X-com.

This is a rare find, a charming and engaging game that tickles all the sweet spots for players that like X-com and AD&D. The story of the adventurers is told in a web comic format with choices that affect the characters (losing a hand, turning into a skeleton, love affairs, etc.). There is a strategic overview with the world divided into territories the characters must manage (explore this region, recruit in that one, defend this other one). And finally tactical combat like in X-com, only with cardboard piece much like a board game. All of the elements gel together to create a very memorable coherent game. The campaigns are well written, very cheeky and fun. The opposition ramps up in difficulty with each battle, but it never feels overwhelming like other rouguelike games. Especially as your characters ramp with improved abilities themselves. I'm finding myself playing this a lot more than me spare time allows.

To hell with AAA studios, give me more of this!

Endless no-choice dialog...

Interesting game with some cool ideas. Combat is like Darkest Dungeon but automated. The only choice you get to make during combat is when to launch a character's special attack and at which enemy. These special attacks only occur when a character has made enough successful attacks in auto-combat.

The biggest drawback for me was the unending dialog with no player choice. Characters will get into 2 way conversations that are delivered a sentence at a time and require a click to advance. These conversation are verbose and go on for a long time. I found myself clicking 20 to 30 times just to rapidly get through this portion and onto the game part. Good conversation can draw a player into a story, but these were very mediocre. Example, the first character you recruit (or recruits you) calls you Pee Pants for several pages of dialog. I would have liked to play more but this tedious aspect of the game just sank it for me.
