Ongoing issue with steamvr being a laggy mess and even crashing randomly
Ongoing issue with steamvr being a laggy mess and even crashing randomly. As the title says, I have been having issues since December 2025. To give some background, I use mobile hotspot on my pc, and connect headset through that. Was working perfectly despite my motherboard being only wifi5. I have a quest pro. Was working as far back as 2024.

pc specs Ryzen 9 5950x
Tuf gaming x570 mobo
32gb ddr4 ram 3200mhz
rtx 3080TI
win 10
Quest Pro
WIFI 7 ROG TRI-Band wfi adapter

Previously using my current setup, even before getting a new wifi adapter everything was working perfectly. Moved to Texas, got a new internet and was gaming wired internet connection, connected headset through router. Everything worked perfect. Moved back to my current home, back on old internet, using mobile hotspot again, everything was working perfectly for a week. Not sure what changed but one night I started having random lag, mainly when entering steamvr overlay to look at stuff/desktops while playing vrchat. The lag would get worse and worse, especially in the overlay, to the point that steamvr would just stop, and eventually crash. No matter what virtual desktop settings I use, it continues to be a ongoing issue that it would have random lag, and or crash eventually. I managed to get it to be somewhat useable for my last few weeks at home, but lag remained and I had to drop virtual desktop settings down to minimum bandwidth etc. to keep it from crashing. I have completely nuked my pc and reinstalled everything five times. Even tried going to win11. Nothing has worked to fix the ongoing lag.
Just booted everything up for first time today after a month break, Steamvr remains completely unplayable, constant lag spikes, despite a fresh install of win10, all drivers, gpu drivers, and a upgraded wifi7 adapter. Headset is connected directly to pc through mobile hotspot, and this previously has worked perfectly. I have narrowed down it being a steamvr issue, everything works smooth, virtual desktop is smooth and everything works, it is only when in pcvr in steamvr that I experience intense lag, and eventual crash.

My system cpu, gpu, and ram are rarely every being pushed each barely hitting 60% utilization, gpu may hit 80% , when I have been able to get a game to launch and go into even demanding vrchat worlds with tons of stuff going on and avatars characters loaded, and the lag is even bad and unplayable in steamvr home where my system is basically at idle. I am at a loss as to what to do now to fix this issue and play vr again, I know it is not a hardware issue. I am assuming something in the update around December has broken steamvr. I have also tried connecting through routers that are wired, and not wired, to see if it is a issue with mobile hotspot, but no difference with steamvr.

I have also tried today using the beta, current public version, and previous versions of steamvr. It seems to be steamvr itself is still laggy, I am watching the frame rates themselves within games like vrchat remain the same, even while steamvr is lagging. Virtual desktop is set to auto adjust bitrate, and it auto adjust it into 100+ and my adapter is wifi7, and everything is connected to the 5ghz channel. The previous version runs the best, but its about every 10 seconds I get laggy slow response from steamvr, doesnt matter if I am in steamvr home, or in a game, it is the same lag. Sometimes it will get so bad that steamvr just hangs for a few seconds, the lag is always only a few seconds long. Running VRchat in a heavy world, with a ton of avatars shown, my cpu usage is barely hitting 20%, my ram is barely at 50%, and gpu is around 50-65% utilization, with my temps around 50C max. My system is not close to being stressed. ♥♥♥♥ has me banging my head against the wall.
I briefly got it working, after going back and forth on steamvr versions. after re-installing steamvr, and then going to installed files and validating integrity of files, it found 2 files and redownloaded those files. Worked flawlessly without lag for 4 hours. I went to bed. Got up today, started steamvr, lag fest again. I have even redone what I did last night, but that fix is doing nothing. smh.
Been having the same exact issue, with similar rig specs. Bugging out for the past week and even after uninstalling/validating those 2 files keep disappearing, with the program now refusing to uninstall as of writing this.. can't really think of what else might work until a patch/update comes out

Yep, I managed to get it working once with validating the files, and now its back to doing the same ♥♥♥♥. Very frustrating. And steam has yet to say anything about them addressing this bug, and it looks to be a long ongoing issue that randomly pops up.
I've had the same issues but with these specs.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070
Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6E AX211 160MHz
WD Blue SN580 1TB
Memory DDR5(?) 32GB
12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-12900K

Any updates?
I found windows update had installed some random intel lan drivers. idk how I figured it was that, but I uninstalled that in device manager and got it working. Something else broke it again a month later, and I am currently hunting the next fix cus wtf.
My only fix has been to go back to using a link cable and meta links software because even after a new mobo, cpu, ram, and trying to use the ideal routers listed for VD, and completley fresh clean installs of windows, the issue would come right back. VD performance overlay would show latency under game, or network. I've gone from a ryzen 9 5950x, 32gb ddr4 ram, and a 3080ti which WAS working perfectly, until december 2025 and it suddenly stopped working, to a 7800x3d, 32gb ddr5 ram at 6k hz, and same 3080ti, and frame rates are still high in vrc, but the micro stutters persist and make it unplayable over virtual desktop.

issue is 100% a software related encoding issue that persists despite following all guides, and is either VD or steamvr itself causing the issue. VD runs fine with no issues when launched and connected in headset, the micro stutters that makes it unplayable only pops up once in the steamvr environment, despite plenty of performance headroom, latest router, software etc.

New mobo has a newer usb-c port that can now keep my quest pro charged, and works perfectly. something around december has either broken steamvr/virtual desktop and noone has a answer. same issue across various routers, hardware setups.
only stopped using the link cable because it didnt charge the quest pro on my old mobo, and the 3rd party cables that would keep my quest 2 charging, didnt work with the Q Pro. lol
